It’s that time of year again. The holidays are here, the temperatures are dropping, and winter is quickly approaching. With the onset of cooler temperatures, it’s important to do some routine maintenance to ensure your vehicle runs smoothly throughout the winter months.

Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered with a checklist to get your vehicle ready for winter.

Check your vehicle’s battery.

Many of us have been there. You’re running late, you get in your vehicle, and it’s cold outside. You turn the key, and it doesn’t crank. The cold weather can deplete your vehicle’s battery. Before getting stranded one morning, let our Ford service technicians check your battery.

Check tire pressure and tread depth.

Though we do not get snow and ice often, it’s still good to check your tire pressure and tread depth before winter weather comes. Having proper tread depth is important under normal driving conditions for safety and even more so for wet and icy roads. Use the penny test to check your tire tread depth. Stick a penny with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you see Lincoln’s entire head, it’s time for you to replace your tires. Also, be sure to check the PSI in all four tires. In colder weather, tire pressure decreases 1-2 psi for every 10 degrees temperature decreases. The optimal PSI for your vehicle’s tires is available in your owner’s manual.

Check belts, hoses, and fluids.

Cold temperatures can weaken the hoses and belts that keep your engine running. Be sure to check the belts and hoses for cracks or signs of wear and tear and replace them if needed. It’s also important to check the antifreeze, wiper fluid, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. Getting a professional to examine these fluids will ensure that your vehicle’s fluids are at the proper levels to keep it running safely and efficiently.
