What Oil Does a Ford Maverick Take?
Your Maverick's oil depends entirely on which engine is under the hood:
2.5L Hybrid: Motorcraft® SAE 0W-20, meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C972-A1. This applies to every hybrid Maverick from 2022 forward, front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive alike.
2.0L EcoBoost®: Motorcraft® SAE 5W-30, meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C971-A1. Same story for every EcoBoost Maverick from 2022 on, including Tremor and Lobo models.
The thinner 0W-20 is chosen for the hybrid because that Atkinson-cycle engine shuts off and restarts constantly in traffic, and a lighter oil circulates faster on each restart. The turbocharged EcoBoost needs the opposite: 5W-30 holds a stronger oil film at the extreme temperatures a turbocharger bearing sees under boost.
Why You Can't Swap Between the Two
Because both engines wear the same badge, it's an easy mistake to make, especially at a quick-lube shop working off a model name instead of a VIN.
Run 0W-20 in the turbocharged EcoBoost and the oil film at the turbo bearings is thinner than designed for, which accelerates wear on the single most expensive component in that engine. Go the other direction and put 5W-30 in the hybrid, and you're asking a heavier oil to circulate through an engine built around rapid stop-start cycling. Neither mistake announces itself right away. Both shorten engine life, and neither is something your warranty is obligated to cover.

How Many Quarts of Oil Does a Ford Maverick Take?
Ford revised the EcoBoost fill partway through the Maverick's run, so this is where a lot of online information is simply out of date. According to Motorcraft's official Oil Quick Reference Applications and Crankcase Capacities Chart:

How Often Should You Change the Oil in a Ford Maverick?
The Maverick's owner's manual puts typical intervals at 7,500–10,000 miles for normal use, 5,000–7,500 miles for severe use, and 3,000–5,000 miles for extreme use.
For a Maverick, "severe" means regular towing near the 2,000- or 4,000-pound ceiling, a bed loaded down every weekend, or long stretches of idling. Most driving, including commuting and highway driving, falls into the “Normal" category.
Every Maverick comes with Ford's Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor®, which watches actual engine revolutions, operating temperature, cold starts, and driving patterns rather than counting miles. When roughly 5% of oil life remains, your cluster displays "Change Engine Oil Soon." At 0%, it reads "Oil Change Required," meaning the oil and filter need to be replaced now.
It’s important to note that Hybrid Mavericks often go much farther between changes, but the one-year maximum still applies no matter what the monitor says. Because the gas engine shuts off so often, the odometer climbs faster than engine hours do, and oil ages on a calendar as much as on a meter. If your commute is short and mostly electric, the engine may never fully warm up, allowing moisture and fuel to accumulate in the oil instead of burning off. The best thing you can do for your hybrid engine is get an oil change every year, no matter what the odometer reading says.
Signs Your Maverick Is Due
The oil-life monitor is reliable, but it’s important to pay attention to signs like:
Oil that's dark and thick on the dipstick instead of clear amber.
A dropping oil level between checks, which points to burning or a leak, not just a normal change.
A gasoline smell in the oil, most common on EcoBoost trucks doing lots of short trips- fuel dilution thins the oil and cuts its protection.
A rougher, noisier cold start, particularly on hybrids where the engine cycles on and off frequently.
An unexplained decrease in your fuel economy.
