2021 Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer has been the three-row SUV of choice of families who prize power, comfort, and reliability in a vehicle. After a complete overhaul in 2020, the Explorer takes its new look into 2021 with no major changes.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
Each of the five 2021 Explorer trims can seat up to seven people, but you reduce seating capacity to six if you opt for second-row captain's chairs. The entry-level model, simply called the Explorer, features LED headlights and taillights, a power liftgate with spoiler, and a rear bumper step pad. The XLT trim adds exterior flourishes such as signature LED headlights, a black mesh grille insert with chrome details, and black roof rack side rails.
With the midrange Limited trim, you'll enjoy automatic headlights and windshield wipers, LED fog lamps, dual chrome exhaust tips, and a bright silver mesh grille with chrome details. Satin aluminum roof rails and body-colored door handles complete the sophisticated look.
Up next, the sport-tuned ST trim comes with blackout tail lamps, a black mesh grille insert, quad chrome exhaust tips, and a foot-activated version of the liftgate. The top-of-the-line Platinum trim primarily adds interior luxury features along with a twin-panel moonroof. It also upgrades the look of the Explorer with a satin aluminum grille, front and rear skid plates, and liftgate applique.
Engine (Power)
Explorer drivers can choose from three brawny engines. The base option is a turbo-four engine that gets 300 horsepower, while upgrades include two different twin-turbos that get 365 and 400 horsepower. All three come with a 10-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.
Performance
If you go with the standard engine, you'll get exceptional fuel economy for a vehicle of this size, at about 21 city and 28 highway miles per gallon. You'll immediately notice the Explorer's smooth ride and athletic handling. With the right equipment, your SUV will be able to tow 5,600 pounds. Any trim of the 2021 Explorer can receive an upgrade to Ford's intelligent four-wheel-drive system.
Interior
The Explorer ranks near the top of the midsize SUV class for cargo space, with nearly 88 cubic feet when you fold the seats flat. You'll also enjoy plenty of standard tech in this vehicle, including an 8-inch touch screen that will keep you connected with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration and a wireless hot spot. Every trim also includes a six-speaker stereo with satellite radio, four USB ports, push-button remote start, and three-zone automatic climate control.
Safety Features
Every 2021 Explorer is equipped with an array of standard safety features. Ford's MyKey system lets you set speed and volume control limits for other drivers — a unique benefit for parents. Other driver-assistance equipment standard on each model includes pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, a rearview camera, lane-keeping assistance, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and a driver drowsiness monitor.
Available safety features include a surround-view camera system, reverse braking assist, parallel and perpendicular parking assist, evasive steering assist, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control.
Price does not include Infrastructure Maintenance Fee of $500, SCDMV tag and title fees, or Dealer closing fee of $499.00
